The Pac-Five football team held off McKinley last night at Aloha Stadium, 27-26, after stopping the Tigers just inches short of the goal line on a two-point conversion with 41 seconds remaining in the opening game of the Father Bray Classic.
Eugene Tanner The Honolulu Advertiser McKinley, which competes in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red (top tier) Conference, has been one of the OIA's top teams in recent years.
"It feels awesome," said Wolfpack receiver Gilbert Gonzales, who ran for three straight touchdowns to help Pac-Five score 20 straight points in the first half to erase a 6-0 deficit. "We knew they were a good team and that we were the underdogs. But we just stuck with it, we got together and we focused."
Gonzales, listed as 5 feet 4 and 130 pounds, also threw the go-ahead touchdown pass on a 45-yard halfback option to Royce Alvarado with 1:55 remaining in the game. The Tigers had tied the score at 20 with 3:50 left on Lua'aso Peters' 24-yard touchdown run.
McKinley closed to 27-26 on Robin Pau's 14-yard pass to Chris Quiocho with 41 seconds remaining, but Peters was stopped just short of the goal line on the two-point conversion attempt.
