What Michael Hirokawa showed yesterday at Kozuki Stadium is not reflected in his statistics.

Hirokawa overcame a hyperextended knee early in the game by rushing for four touchdowns and 117 yards to lead host Iolani over McKinley, 41-18, in nonleague high school football.

"(It's) not so much the yards that he gained, but he showed me some toughness," Iolani coach Wendell Look said. "I was pleased with that. He could've easily said it's too sore and sit out, but he came back and had a helluva game."

Hirokawa, who returned after having his knee iced, deflected credit to his teammates.

"The line did a good job," said Hirokawa, a 5-foot-8, 160-pound junior. "Whenever I cut, my teammates were there to help me out."

He scored on runs of 4, 6, 5 and 46 yards for the Raiders (2-0), who will face Pearl City next weekend.

"Give that kid credit," McKinley coach William Moeava said of Hirokawa. "He runs hard, whether he's cutting or runs straight up the field. He runs at 100 percent all the time."

After Hirokawa's first TD, Landon Patoc's 74-yard punt return for a touchdown and Kiran Kepoo's 26-yard TD pass to Travis Nishioka gave Iolani a 20-0 first-quarter lead.

But the Tigers (0-2), whose rally fell short against Pac-Five a week earlier, struck back on Robin Pau TD passes of 11 yards to Charles Seyer and 5 to Chris Quiocho to pull to 20-12 at the half.

Iolani stopped McKinley's momentum on the opening kickoff of the second half. The Raiders recovered a pooch kick near the sideline at the McKinley 26. No Tiger went after the ball, which is free once it passes 10 yards from the kick-off line.

"That's one of the things that's in our kicking game," Look said. "It's just a matter of calling it at the right time. ...

"That was the turning point. They had two big drives just before the half. They had the momentum and they were going to have the ball coming out of the second half."

The Raiders capitalized on the good field position, setting up Hirokawa's second TD that made it 27-12.

"They caught us by surprise with that pooch kick," Moeava said. "But we drill it in our practices and we're supposed to be able to field that. ... That turned the game big time."

Besides the breakdown in the kick return, the Tigers had trouble holding on the football. They fumbled four times, losing the ball once. But that one came after a 15-yard gain. One fumble that the Tigers did not lose lost eight yards; another lost a potential first down when the receiver lost yardage to recover the loose ball.

Although Pau completed 20 of 39 passes for 226 yards and three TDs, several of his passes were dropped.

"If guys don't catch it, we don't move," Moeava said.

McKinley tried to make it a game again late in the third quarter on Pau's 22-yard TD pass to Quiocho. But Hirokawa' 46-yard TD run on Iolani's next series sealed it for the Raiders.
