How could Punahou senior Sarah Weisskopf improve on her Interscholastic League of Honolulu Player of the Year season of 2004?
Advertiser Library photo Weisskopf, a right-handed pitcher who went 8-3 en route to winning Player of the Year honors last season, was the ace of a Buffanblu team that went 14-0 this season for their first ILH championship since 1974.
Weisskopf pitched two no-hitters, three one-hitters and one two-hitter. She also defeated four-time defending league champion Kamehameha twice, 4-2 and 5-0.
In the second victory over the Warriors, Weisskopf struck out seven in keeping Kamehameha's powerful lineup scoreless.
And in the title-clinching victory over St. Francis, she pitched a one-hitter to help Punahou win, 4-0.
The Buffanblu and Warriors led the way with five players each selected to the ILH All-Star first team.
Kamehameha's first team All-Stars are second baseman Liane Horiuchi, outfielders Shelby Ford and Charina Sumner, pitcher Noe Esperas and designated player Hoku Nohara.
St. Francis shortstop Anita Manuma, University High pitcher Jessica Ghazali and Iolani utility player Chelsea Keola round out the first team.
Horiuchi, Matsushima, Weir and Weisskopf are repeat first-team selections. Manuma, a junior, made the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Western Division All-Star team last year as an outfielder playing for Kapolei.
Because she played at St. Francis as a freshman, she was considered a returning student and did not have to sit out this season under the ILH's transfer rules.
Punahou's Kristl Chinen, who sat out last year while on maternity leave, was named Coach of the Year.
By going undefeated, that's how.
Sarah Weisskopf helped bring Punahou its first ILH title since 1974.
Punahou is represented by Weisskopf, first baseman Cristen Aona, third baseman Gail Matsushima, outfielder Adrienne Tanaka and catcher Kaha Weir.
