Flowers (pua) have always been an integral part of Island life. They help us mark our milestones: pikake for a wedding, maile for graduation, ginger for Tutu's birthday, plumeria for a visitor or kamakaina returning home. Pua are often celebrated in song and dance; they even have their own special hula motion.

This spring, fashion designers the world over are trumpeting flowers. Prada scattered petals over a fairytale pantsuit; Marc Jacobs took his tulle confections into the garden with cobalt blossoms at the neck, waist and hem. Dries Van Noten, StellaMcCartney and Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga printed fields of flowers, splashing them on edgy silhouettes.

From bold and op-art to watercolor, painterly and poetic, flowers are blooming every where on fashions and accessories. ~Paula Rath
