In the weeks before every major state tournament, inquiries begin to flood the Hawaii High School Athletic Association office about the eligibility of certain star athletes.

Some of the calls are anonymous, some from parents, some from coaches, HHSAA executive director Keith Amemiya said.

The most frequent question of recent weeks was, "Is Nicole Garbin too old" to play in this week’s girls state soccer tournament?

The answer, from Amemiya, is, "Nicole Garbin is not too old. She is eligible."

Garbin’s 19th birthday is today, but HHSAA rules allow any athlete whose 19th birthday falls on or after Sept. 1 to compete for the entire school year.

Garbin said she started elementary school late in Erie, Pa. She is a native of Hawaii and moved back here when she was 11.
