New executive chef at Parc Cafe

Don Maruyama Jr. has been named executive chef of the Parc Cafe at the Waikiki Parc Hotel. Maruyama, a 14-year veteran of the food service industry, was most recently the executive chef at Fort Street Bar and Grill in downtown Honolulu. Born and raised in the Islands, Maruyama has a degree in chemistry, attended medical school at the University of Hawaii and is a graduate of Kapiolani Community College’s culinary arts program. The 96-seat Parc Cafe serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch.

Emeril Lagasse contest announced

Kids in grades 4-8 have a chance of winning a visit from popular chef Emeril Lagasse, who will transform their school lunch into

a healthy "kicked up" feast. Sponsored by Food Network for the second time, the "Emeril Kicks Up Your School Cafeteria" national promotional campaign also includes filming of an hourlong special to be aired this fall on television. To enter, viewers have until Saturday to write why they want Emeril to come to their school.

Entrants must be 18 years or older and have a child in grades 4-8. Enter at www.foodtv.com or by sending a postcard with name, address, telephone number, child’s name and grade to Food Network’s Emeril Kicks Up Your School Cafeteria, P.O. Box 8699, New Milford, CT 06776-8699. A random drawing will determine the winner. Web entry and postmark deadline is Saturday; mailed entries must be received by Feb. 15.

Competition seeks diabetic recipes

Kraft foods is sponsoring a national recipe contest aimed at those with diabetes. The Kraft Diabetic Choices Recipe Contest is open to individuals with diabetes as well as their families and friends. The contest is looking for recipes that are original and diabetic-friendly, and that feature a Kraft Food product. Categories include desserts and snacks, main dishes, beverages and kids’ favorites. The first-prize winner in each category receives a Kraft Diabetic Choices gift basket valued at $500. Entrants will receive a copy of the Kraft Diabetic Cookbook while supplies last.
