Harbor agent put on leave after theft arrest

Advertiser Staff

WAILUKU, Maui — A Lahaina Harbor agent arrested on suspicion of first-degree theft has been put on administrative leave by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources pending the results of an investigation.

State Attorney General Earl Anzai yesterday would not confirm reports that the 47-year-old state employee was arrested in connection with mooring fees that were collected but not turned over to the state . A first-degree theft charge would mean more than $20,000 was suspected of being stolen.

Anzai said the investigation was launched several months ago following a citizen’s complaint. The harbor agent was arrested Tuesday and released without being charged.
