Power outages put state soccer on hold

Advertiser Staff

Intermittent power outages in Aloha Stadium forced the state soccer tournament game between Mililani and Kealakehe to be suspended last night.

The teams played to a 0-0 halftime tie. The game, part of the AT&T Wireles Boys State Soccer Tournament, will be picked up in the second half at 9:30 a.m. today at Aloha Stadium.

Paying customers can to use last night’s ticket stubs to re-enter the parking lot and the stadium.

The power went out at least three times, twice during play in the first half, and another just before halftime.

There were no power outages during the three earlier games played at Aloha Stadium.

According to Scott Chan, Aloha Stadium events manager, a downed telephone pole in the stadium mall area "affected the power in this particular area."

After consultation, the state soccer tournament committee decided to suspend the game.

"We decided for the safety of the players and fans, we felt it was in everyone’s best interest to suspend the game and continue tomorrow morning," said Keith Amemiya, executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.

"Because of the unpredictability of when the lights would go out again and because it was getting late, we made the decision to suspend the game."

High winds, more than rain, also factored into the committee’s decision, Ame-miya said.

The winner of the Mililani-Kealakehe game won’t get much rest. The winner will play third seed Baldwin of Maui at 5:30 p.m. today at Aloha Stadium.

The loser will play in the consolation bracket tomorrow against Hawaii Prep.

Aiea 1, Kamehameha 0: Matt Itagaki scored from about six yards out off a corner kick from teammate Jarvis Uehara to lift Na Alii to victory.

The goal came at the 8:42 mark.

Aiea goalkeeper Matt Yoshimura had five saves, including one on a breakaway in the second half when he came out about 15 yards to smother a shot.

Aiea had 12 goal kicks, seven corner kicks, and 12 shots on goal.

Kamehameha goalkeeper Zachary McAngus had four saves.

The Warriors had nine goal kicks, eight corner kicks and 12 shots on goal.

Campbell 2, Hawaii Prep 0: David Peterson scored the Sabers’ first goal ever in state play at 23:54 on a memorable individual effort. He picked up the ball about 30 yards out and beat three defenders on the left side, then put his shot into the right corner from about 15 yards.

Center midfielder Michael Ryman, a workhorse throughout the game, clinched the victory at 79:46. He pushed the ball into space from 35 yards, outsprinted the HPA defense to it, and rolled it under the charging goalkeeper from eight yards.

After being blown out in their last two OIA games, the Sabers played their best game of their best season, earning a quarterfinal berth today against defending champion, No. 2 seeded Iolani at 3:30 p.m.

Shots were nearly even; HPA had 10 and Campbell 12. Saber goalkeeper Kawika Ishikawa saved four and HPA’s Michael Hickman three.

Campbell improved to 9-4-1. HPA fell to 13-4 and will play in the losers’ bracket tomorrow.

Kalani 1, Kapaa 0: The game was marred by 46 fouls, six yellow cards and two red cards. Kapaa, which was assessed 30 fouls and five yellows, finished the game with 10 players after one Warrior was ejected for a flagrant foul. Another Kapaa player was disqualified for his second yellow card.

Alex Fraher scored the goal at 12:05 on a rebound in a scramble at the goal mouth after a corner kick. The first shot was blocked by Kapaa goalkeeper Graham Kovarik and Fraher headed the rebound past the keeper. Another Warrior cleared the ball, but the assistant referee ruled it had crossed the goal line.

Kalani goalie Richard Dabbs made four saves on Kapaa’s eight shots. Kovarik had one save on Kalani’s nine shots.

Most of the fouls were for pushing and none was inside the penalty area.

Kalani (9-2-1), which finished fifth in the Oahu Interscholastic Association, plays No. 1 seeded Pearl City (12-0-0), the OIA champion, in a quarterfinal game at 7:30 tonight. Kapaa (7-2-2) plays a loser-out game at 11:30 today vs. Kamehameha.
