The Kamehameha Schools Varsity Cheer team finished fourth at the National High School Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Fla., last weekend.
The fourth-place finish is the highest ever for a Hawaii high school. The squad competed in the Small Varsity division, against 62 other teams.
This year the championships included more than 5,600 cheerleaders representing 48 states.
The competition will air on ESPN March 23.
AWARDS
TEAM Unlimited gets Telly: TEAM Unlimited, a Hawaii based sports marketing and television production company, has been recognized with two Telly Awards for "1999 XTERRA World Championship" and episode three of its "Hawaii Outdoors" series.
Telly Awards is a national competition that recognizes outstanding non-network television programming.
SURFING
Pipeline Pro set: The 12th annual HIC Pipeline Pro, the second event of the Hawaii Pro Am Circuit, will have three days of surf competition between Tuesday and March 4. Contest officials will wait for the best surf conditions during that time at the Banzai Pipeline to give 175 surfers their best chance at winning the $20,000 purse.
SOFTBALL
Free gas: Chevron will give away gas certificates totalling up to $350 on Chevron Night on Friday as part of this weekends 2001 Paradise Classic softball tournament. The University of Hawaii will play UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
