FBI continues investigation into infant's death

By Mike Gordon

The FBI is still investigating the death last week of a Navy submariner’s 7-month-old son.

Christian Kerbaugh was pronounced dead last Wednesday after his mother brought him to the emergency room of Tripler Army Medical Center. The boy’s 31-year-old mother had been taking care of her three young children at her ¸liamanu Military Reservation home. Her husband is on a six-month deployment aboard the USS Cheyenne.

"We are continuing our investigation, and we are working with Army Central Investigation Division on this matter," said FBI spokesman special agent John Gillies. "It has not gone away at this point."

An autopsy was conducted Thursday said Frank Quallen, chief investigator for the Honolulu Medical Examiner. He said the cause of death is not known yet.

"What we see right now is not enough to tell us what happened," Quallen said. "We have to do more tests and microscopic studies."

The tests could take anywhere from days to months to complete, he said.
