Iolani freshman Derrick Low made quite a first impression during opening night of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball season.
Low scored 27 points as host Iolani defeated Punahou, 55-43, last night.
The 6-foot Low scored 15 points during a 22-8 second-half run as the Raiders broke open a close game.
Lows layup with 1:33 remaining gave Iolani its largest lead at 54-36. He left 10 seconds later to a nice ovation.
"That kid is a phenom," Punahou coach Alan Lum said. "If you sag off on him, hes going to shoot. Stay off of him and hes going to penetrate and make his teammates better. I think we played pretty tough defense on him. The shots he made he earned them."
Bobby Nash, Iolanis 6-foot-7 sophomore center, was in foul trouble for most of the game and finished with four points.
"I didnt say take over (to Low) I just kept telling him Bobby is in foul trouble and we need points," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "Thats all he needed. He took shots within the context of the offense. He was never out of control. That shows a lot of maturity for a 14-year-old."
Said Low: "I dont know how Im going to play every day, but tonight I was on. I could do it today, but who knows how Im going to play in the next game."
In addition to his offensive production, Low showed a variety of skills.
"What really made me happy was I saw his maturity as an all-around player today," Mugiishi said. "He took a charge, had some steals, grabbed a few rebounds. Its nice to see a player who makes a name for himself on offense doing all those things."
Iolani forced 21 turnovers with a man-to-man defense, and half- and full-court presses.
"A lot of times offensive teams like Iolani are not credited for tough defense," Lum said. "When we did turn it over against their trap, it turned into easy buckets."
Punahou went on a 7-0 run in the first three minutes of the game. Iolani used full-court pressure midway through the first quarter to get back into the game. The Raiders went on a 15-4 run in the final four minutes of the quarter to take a 17-13 lead and kept the lead for good. Low scored seven points during the rally.
