St. Louis the early favorite in ILH wrestling

Advertiser Staff

St. Louis will be the team to beat in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and the state this year, based on preseason boys results.

The Crusaders won the Big Island Tournament, the Maui Tournament, The Referee’s Scholarship Tournament and the Iolani Tournament. They have three returning state champions in Troy Takahashi at 119 pounds, nationally-ranked Travis Lee at 125 and 130 pounds and Jonathan Spiker at 140-145, and other solid performers.

"Coach Todd Los Banos has put together a powerhouse," said coach Carl Schroers of Iolani, the defending league and state champion.

Behind St. Louis, "Kamehameha, Punahou and Iolani all have solid teams and are very close to each other ... one of those any-given-day things," Schroers said.

ILH wrestling begins today at noon at Punahou.

Kahuku looks to be the best in the public-school Oahu Interscholastic Association, which opened its dual meet season last night. Kahuku returns most of last year’s starters and have accrued preseason victories over Iolani and Punahou at the Iolani dual meet tournament.

"They’re stacked," said 15-year McKinley coach Chris Johnson.

Moanalua, perennial power of the OIA’s Western Division, has been realigned to the Eastern Division this year, putting the league’s top three teams, Kahuku, Moanalua and McKinley, all in the same division.

In OIA girls wrestling, two-time state champion Moanalua appears dominant again with two dozen wrestlers, the state’s largest girls roster.
