‘Iolani held St. Louis to one field goal in the last 15 minutes and the Raiders put on a bull’s-eye shooting exhibition of their own to beat the Crusaders, 47-28, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball game Friday night at McCabe Gym.
Seven of ‘Iolani’s nine baskets in the game were 3-pointers. They made five-of-six 3-point attempts during a 21-3 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters.
"They came out firing," said St. Louis senior Enoch McKeague. "We had open looks, too, but we were not hitting, and pretty soon they were out of reach."
Freshman Derrick Low started the run with a pretty 3 that put ‘Iolani ahead, 23-21. Bobby Webster hit two and supersub Travis McGaughy made two in a row, one from each corner, to stretch ‘Iolani’s lead to double digits for the first time.
The Crusaders didn’t get a basket during the long-distance barrage and went more than 10 minutes without a field goal until Jason Rivers’ jumper from the low post with 4:37 left to play.
"St. Louis is so athletic they found seams in our press and spread us out in the first half," ‘Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi explained. "So in the second half we packed it in (to a zone defense) to make them prove they can shoot."
They couldn’t, not last night. St. Louis had as many total baskets as ‘Iolani (9) but not a single trey.
"We had some easy shots that didn’t go down, and then we started pressing," St. Louis coach Delbert Tengan said.
"We will learn from this and get better," promised McKeague, one of seven Crusaders on a roster of 11 who joined the team after the last football game Dec. 3.
St. Louis played only five preseason games to ‘Iolani’s 11.
McGaughy led ‘Iolani with 13 points.
"That’s his job," Mugiishi said, "to give us a good lift. We like his spark off the bench."
He was the only player in the game in double figures. McKeague led St. Louis with seven.
‘Iolani, ranked second behind Kalaheo in the HawaiiSportsNet work.com coaches and media poll, improved to 4-0 in the ILH and 12-3 overall. St. Louis, the defending league champion and state runner-up last year, fell to 2-1 and 5-3.

Lana‘i 62, King KEKAULIKE 59: Likeke Davis scored six of Lana‘i’s nine points in overtime to lift the host Pinelads past Na Ali‘i in a Maui Interscholastic League game Friday night. Davis finished with 15 points. Sam Spano and Rocky Sanches each had 16 points for Lana‘i. King Kekaulike’s Adrian Lock led all scorers with 18 points.
Last night, the Pinelands made it a sweep with a 56-53 victory over King Kekaulike. Sanches and Travis Pascua each scored 18 points for Lana‘i. King Kekaulike’s Jaren Adams led all scorers with 23 points.
