Sacred Hearts surprises 'Iolani, 6-2

Advertiser Staff

Sacred Hearts shocked two-time defending state champion Iolani, 6-2, yesterday, and Kamehameha battled into sole possession of first place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

Kamehameha had its own struggle, but managed an eight-inning, 2-1 victory over Hawaii Baptist/St. Andrew’s/St. Francis to improve its record to 11-1. Iolani, after winning 38 straight ILH games since 1999, has lost two of its last three and dropped to 10-2.

Both games were played at Iolani.

Sacred Hearts scored four unearned runs in a five-run sixth inning. In the inning, the Lancers made the most of two hits, one hit batsman, one walk and three Iolani errors.

"We fell apart. They put a lot of pressure on our defense and it broke down," Iolani coach Chris Shimabukuro said. "They were much more focused than we were; they had a lot more intensity and wanted it a lot more."

The Raiders have lost as many games (2) this season as they did in the last two years, when they went 36-2 and won two league and state championships.

"It’s nice to be able to hold a lead; we’ve been struggling," Sacred Hearts coach Wade Okamura said. The Lancers are 8-4.

Justina Welch won the game in relief for Sacred Hearts. She took over for Amber Juan with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth — when Iolani scored both its runs — and was not charged with any runs or hits in three innings.

"Our pitchers did a nice job changing speeds and kept them off balance," Okamura said.

Sacred Hearts was the last team to beat Iolani, on Jan. 19, 1999, before the Raiders started their 38-game win streak. Kamehameha ended the streak, 4-2, in nine innings on Jan. 6.

Kamehameha won in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-out hit by Tricia Arneson, which scored Ashley Ruff.
