Advertiser Staff

The year of the dragon may be ending, but don’t tell that to the undefeated Honokaa High Dragon basketball team.

Honokaa swept St. Joseph, 49-35, and Pahoa, 74-53, this past weekend to improve to 4-0 in Big Island Interscholastic Federation boys’ basketball.

The only other unbeaten team is Kealakehe of Kona, which is 3-0 following a 38-35 victory over Konawaena.

Derek Gabriel scored 18 points and Eddie Aldridge 10 to lead Honokaa over St. Joseph. Gabriel had 21, and Aldridge and Austin Souza each added 15 against Pahoa.

Defending state champion Hilo, which lost its opener, improved to 3-1 by trouncing Hawaii Preparatory Academy, 68-49, behind Tim Toomey’s 16 points. The Vikings then crushed Ka¬, 96-69, as Napela Naniole scored 26 points and Toomey added 20.

In other games, Keaau won its first varsity game by stopping Konawaena, 34-30; Waiakea beat Hawaii Prep, 71-56; and Kohala dumped Laupahoehoe, 75-50.

SOCCER

Hawaii Prep girls lose: Waiakea’s Jobette Nabarro scored at the 50th minute and the Warriors went on to deal Hawaii Prep’s girls their first Big Island Interscholastic Federation defeat of the season Saturday in Hilo.

Hawaii Prep is 7-1; Waiakea 6-2.

"They took it right at us and controlled the game," said Hawaii Prep coach Steve Perry. "The better team won today. I hope that we come out with more determination in future games."

Nabarro scored on a cross from Lauren Minato.

Wildes Brawner scored with less than a minute to play to lead Hawaii Prep’s boys to a 3-2 victory over Waiakea. Hawaii Prep improved to 8-1 and Waiakea dropped to 6-4.
