The players and alumni will test their batting skills against an outfield wall 15 feet closer to home plate. It also will be two feet shorter than the original wall, which had dimensions of 340 feet down the foul lines, 380 to the alleys and 400 to center.
Hawaii has set its 36-player roster, 32 of whom
may suit up for home games and 25 who are allowed to make road trips.
Alumni expected to attend are pitchers Mark Johnson and Paul Ah Yat, but will not play, according to a UH press release. Johnson made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers last season. He pitched in nine games, making three starts. Ah Yat spent the 2000 season at Triple-A Nashville, the Pittsburgh Pirates farm team. In five minor league seasons, Ah Yat is 37-27 with a 3.38 earned run average.

The 2001 season is the final under coach Les Murakamis regime. He announced he would retire after the season. But he suffered a stroke Nov. 2 and is in rehabilitation. Assistant Carl Furutani is serving as acting head coach.
The Rainbows season opener is against Sacramento State. A three-game series starts Jan. 25.
Before the alumni game, the UH junior varsity will play Sacramento State at noon.
Meanwhile, UH continues with the selection process for a successor for Murakami. Lewis-Clark coach Ed Cheff told The Advertiser last night he has withdrawn his application. He said having been with the program 25 years "cutting ties was harder than I thought."
