The dramatic escape and capture of Kerbert Silva this month has put O‘ahu Community Correctional Center in the spotlight. Although Silva scaled a 16-foot razor-wire fence and kept police at bay for more than a week, other escapees still missing from the prison never caught the glare of a high-profile manhunt.
In prison jargon, they’re known simply as "the walkaways."
Since 1992, 13 inmates have managed to get away and remain elusive. They are the ones who failed to return to work-furlough programs or the prison’s day reporting center.
Authorities still have warrants out for their arrests. Honolulu Police Department’s CrimeStoppers hot line offers up to $1,000 for information that leads to arrests. Callers to CrimeStoppers - 955-8300 - can remain anonymous.
