A 31-year-old woman and a 2-month-old boy were killed and three people were critically injured when their speeding car smashed into a large tree last night near Honolulu International Airport.
The accident happened around 11 p.m. on Koapaka Street near the intersection of Ohohia Street, police said.
A silver 2001 Buick Century sedan carrying five people was traveling east on Koapaka Street when it jumped the curb and rammed into a tree, police said.
The driver and infant were dead at the scene. A 4-year-old boy, 2-year-old boy and 19-year-old woman were taken to the Queens Medical Center, where they were in critical condition today.
The drivers airbag deployed and the driver was wearing a seatbelt, police said.
The 19-year-old was not wearing a seatbelt. It appears the children also were not restrained, police said. The infant was in an infant carrier, but it was not belted into a seat, police said. It appeared the car was speeding, police said.
The traffic fatalities were the eighth and ninth of this year, compared with 10 at the same time last year, police said.
