Two deejays will host new TV game show

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Editor

Move over, Reege. Make room for Lanai and Augie T., the Island Rhythms 98.5 deejays.

The radio personalities will co-host "Hawaii’s Ultimate Game Show, Jan Ken Po," which will have its debut at 6:30 p.m. April 8, on KHON Fox 2, in the time slot currently occupied by the top-rated local show "Hawaii Stars," which wraps up on April 1.

"It’s a game of chance intended to instill pride in Hawaii," said co-producer Carole Kai, whose Hawaii Stars Presents company is producing the new vehicle that combines a knowledge of local trivia, history and da kine useless information, and a bit of chance.

Two three-member teams -family or extended families — will compete each week in a multiple choice question-and-answer sequence not unlike "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" "Residents will have to have some knowledge of where they live and ultimately appreciate the unique cultural blend that is Hawaii," said Kai, who won’t be on camera in this outing.

With partner Dirk Fukushima co-producing, Hawaii Stars Presents had to come up with a suitable local contest to retain the post-news slot on the Fox affiliate each Sunday. The game will entail fact-based but entertaining questions, said Kai.

Samples:

If you’re going to bocha, would you: go take a bath, go to a beer bust or go to a cockfight? (Answer: Bath).

Don Ho was famous for: Tiny mumbles, tiny marbles, tiny bubbles. (Answer: Bubbles).

Who was the first monarch of Hawaii? Lunalilo, Kamehameha, Kalakaua. (Answer: Kamehameha).

"The show will enable everyone to learn history, sports, little facts about Hawaii we take for granted," said Kai.

"Jan Ken Po" — named after the childhood game of paper, scissors and stone — will be taped at Windward Mall, where the first four shows will be taped starting March 25.

The team with the most points or prizes eventually may be toppled by a challenger in the chance segment of the new show, when the teams wager their winnings in a game of jan ken po. "The losing team can cockroach the winnings of the other team," said Kai. Information: 599-4633.
