Lawyers for three officers aboard the USS Greeneville today challenged the Navy’s theory that safety was compromised when the submarine’s schedule became rushed the day it fatally collided with a Japanese boat.

The officer of the deck of the USS Greeneville at the time of a fatal collision was probably the most methodical junior officer aboard the submarine, which was both his strength and his weakness, according to testimony today from the Navy admiral who investigated the crash.
