The University of Hawaii softball team got shut out by Pacific, 2-0, then bounced back in the nightcap to blow out Western Illinois, 8-0, in Day 2 of the Malihini Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Field.
Pacific center fielder Estee Okumura made the most of her one and only at-bat yesterday, hitting a game-winning home run in the third inning as the Tigers defeated the Wahine in the first game.
Pacific got its second run on an RBI double by Natalie Farmer.
Cindy Ball picked up the win, allowing just two Wahine hits in seven innings with eight strike outs.
UHs Felicity Witt was charged with the loss, allowing five hits with two earned runs.
In the second game, Desiree Duran allowed just one hit in 5 innings and five different Wahine batters recorded an RBI as UH cruised to the win.
Natalie Gonzales tripled to right field to start the game then scored the deciding run on a wild pitch by Melanie Dobson.
Dobson gave up six earned runs on 11 hits in six innings.
The tournament continues at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium today with Hawaii facing Loyola Marymount at 5 p.m. and Stetson at 7 p.m.
GOLF
Asao leads: Norman-Ganin Asao shot 69 yesterday to take a four-stroke lead over Paul Kimura after two rounds of the State Amateur Stroke Play at Pearl Country Club.
Asao, Kimura and Russell Nygard entered the day tied for first at at 71. Kimura hit 73 yesterday for an even-par 144 total. Nygard is two strokes back at 146, followed by Grant Yasui at 147.
The tournament continues today and tomorrow.
BOXING
Colorado bound: Four Hawaii boxing champions will represent the state in the 2001 U.S. Boxing Championships March 11-18 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Hawaii boxers include: Dat Nguyen (119 pounds), Van Oscar Penovaroff (132), Peter Costa (156) and Mark Mareko (201). The contingent will also include team manager Don Tsarks, head coach Bruce Kawano and assistant coach Tim Penovaroff.
Waianae boxers Samson Guillermo (119 pounds) and Mike Keopuhiwa (106) will represent Northern Michigan University and the All-Army Team, respectively.
Winners advance to the U.S. Challenge in Lake Placid, N.Y., to compete for the right to represent the U.S. at the 2001 World Championships in Ireland in June and the 2001 Goodwill Games in Australia in August.
Card scheduled: The Hawaii State Boxing Commission has given tentative approval for Hawaii Professional Boxing Inc. to hold a show at Pier 10 at Aloha Tower Marketplace March 20.
No bouts have yet been approved for the 7 p.m. card.
BODYBUILDING
Classics 20th: The 20th annual Hawaiian Classic Body Building Contest is April 29 at the Hyatt Recency Waikiki.
Lee Priest, a 5-foot-4, 230-pound bodybuilder with 23-inch arms, and Troy Alves will be the guest posers.
The contest includes novice, men, masters, and open women divisions.
Tickets are $30 and $35 and are available at 24 Hour Fitness locations.

CHEERLEADING
National competition: Two Hawaii high school cheerleading squads will are headed for the NCA West Coast Classic, a national cheerleading competition next Saturday, in Anaheim, Calif.
Mililani will compete in the all-girls squad competition. Radford will be competing in the co-ed squad competition.
GYMNASTICS
Karolyi sighting: Bela Karolyi, one of the most successful gymnastic coaches, will be in Honolulu March 18-20, to promote the Ponitac American Team Cup scheduled for March 30-31 at the Neal Blaisdell Center. Karolyi will also make appearances at local gymnastics clubs and community events.
The 2001 Ponitac American Team Cup will feature the U.S. squad facing teams from Romania and China.
QUARTERBACK CLUB
Lumpkin speaks: University of Hawaii Associate Head Football George Lumpkin will be the featured guest speaker at this Mondays Quarterback Club held at the Pagoda International Ballroom.
Also appearing will be Skippa Diaz, Deputy Superintendent for Parks & Recreation, and Kenny Chew, head coach for the state champion Punahou boys and girls swim teams.
Crystal Lee, University of Hawaii Wahine basketball player and Travis Lee, St. Louis High School wrestler will also be recognized as the clubs outstanding female and male sports person for the month of February.
Crystal Lee a senior small forward was twice named the WAC player-of-the week during February. Travis Lee won his third straight state wrestling title and fourth ILH title.
Lunch will start at 11:30 a.m. followed by the program at noon. Lunch is $7. The public is invited.
