"T.N." came to Hawai'i six years ago with her husband, who was going blind.

The couple, whose three adult children are living on the Mainland, moved in to a public housing apartment complex in Kalihi five years ago.

T.N., 59, spoke very little English then.

Her days are spent tending to the needs of her 59-year-old husband, who rarely leaves the apartment. The former soldier, who fought against the Viet Cong and was imprisoned during the war, is totally dependent on his wife, their social worker said.

"For eat, bathroom and walking, I help," T.N. said. "V.C. war cause him blind."

How to make a donation
 •  Checks made payable to The Advertiser Christmas Fund should be mailed to
    Helping Hands Hawai'i
    P.O. Box 19155
    Honolulu, HI 96817
 •  Donations may also be dropped off at any First Hawaiian Bank branch.
 •  Anyone wishing to donate goods instead of money can do so at the Community Clearinghouse at 2100 N. Nimitz Highway near Pu'uhale Street. For details, call 536-7234.
Her husband is a loner but T.N. enjoys being around people.

She began attending twice-a-week English language classes three years ago and became an American citizen last year.

"She's a very good person who mixes well with people," her language teacher Marciana Alcaraz said.

T.N. is not employed but does volunteer work at the complex.

The couple's only source of income is $565 in welfare assistance and $260 in food stamps per month.

Their rent is based on $30 percent of their monthly income.

T.N. said it's enough to live on.

What she would like is a standing electrical fan to keep her husband cool in their humid apartment. One of the two small fans they have is broken. T.N. would also appreciate a microwave to help prepare meals for the couple.
