Driver in critical condition after three-car crash

By Brandon Masuoka
Advertiser Staff Writer

A three-vehicle accident about 9 a.m. today on Kapaa Quarry Road in Kailua left one driver hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

The other two drivers were shaken up but refused treatment at the scene.

Police said a dump truck was headed down the two-lane blacktop toward the city dump followed by a pickup truck when a blue Toyota coming from the opposite direction either pulled out to pass a car in front of him or somehow just swerved into the other lane. The Toyota clipped the back of the dump truck and collided with the pickup.

The driver of the Toyota was pinned inside and had to be extricated by firefighters using the Jaws of Life.

He was taken to The Queen's Medical Center.
