Fads & Finds
Homemade says it from the heart

By Catherine E. Toth
Advertiser Staff Writer

Sometimes homemade is better — and cheaper — than store-bought.

And there’s no better time to test your craft and cooking abilities than Valentine’s Day.

Enter "Valentine Treats: Recipes and Crafts for the Whole Family" (Chronicle Books, February 2001).

Written by Sara Perry, a columnist at The Oregonian, "Valentine Treats" hands the lovestruck giver easy-to-follow instructions for thoughtful gifts and tempting recipes, prettied up with photos good enough to paper your walls.

It offers a range of Valentine treats, from heart-shaped gift tags to angel meringue cake and

decorated cookies, pictured above. It’s even got a recipe for bone-shaped treats for your canine companion.

A staff favorite: A bucket of popcorn mixed with conversation hearts, movie passes, your sweetheart’s favorite candy, love coupons, a gift certificate for a favorite restaurant, or whatever else fits the occasion. It’s perfect for children or your special valentine.

The book, priced at $14.95, is currently in stock at Borders Books Music and Cafe at Ward Centre. It can be ordered at Barnes & Noble, or online at Amazon.com and www.chroniclebooks.com.
