A 48-year-old Lahaina man was killed and two California residents injured last night in a two-car collision in Lahaina, Maui, police said today.
The collision took place about 8 p.m. on Honoapiilani Highway less than two miles south of Olowalu Village Road, police said.
Police said a white Ford Taurus station wagon traveling south on Honoapiilani Highway tried to overtake a car and sideswiped a white Nissan Pathfinder traveling in the opposite direction.
The Pathfinder flipped and landed on its roof on the east shoulder of the highway, while the Ford Taurus came to astop on the highway, police said.
Police said the driver of the Ford Taurus, John C. Barbier, was pronounced dead at the scene. The two riding in the Pathfinder, a 47-year-old man and 45-year-old female, were transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center, where they were both treated for minor injuries and released, police said.
Barbier was not wearing a seatbelt, while the two in the Pathfinder were both restrained by their shoulder and lap belts, police said. Airbags in both cars deployed, police said.
Police are investigating whether speed, alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision.
