Fumes overcome 3 in Sand Island coffee shop

Advertiser Staff

Three people in a Sand Island coffee shop were overcome today by fumes from a gas spill at a nearby storage facility, a fire official said.

Fire officials evacuated three customers and three workers from the Golden China Coffee Shop after the 8:11 a.m.spill.

Three fire companies, including two hazardous materials trucks, and one battalion chief responded to the emergency at 197 Sand Island Access Road, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo.

A generator inside a storage room sprung a gas leak, and the strong gas odor wafted into the coffee shop, Soo said.

Medical personnel tended to a 50-year-old woman, 25-year-old woman and 45-year-old man who were overcome by the fumes, Soo said. The older woman managed the shop owned by the man, Soo said.

The older woman was being administered oxygen at the scene, Soo said.

The generator was inside a nearby commercial or rental storage facility, Soo said. He said fire officials were venting the storage room.
