Former OHA trustee files suit

A lawsuit filed yesterday by former Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee Frenchy DeSoto alleges that OHA violated her employment contract from 1998 to 2000 by repeatedly denying her requests for a kakoo or assistant to help her carry out her duties.

DeSoto, 72, has suffered from heart problems and other ailments that have hampered her ability to walk and perform other physical activities. Filed in Circuit Court, her lawsuit seeks a jury trial and unspecified damages.

Gene research lecture planned

Scott Woodward, a Brigham Young University-Provo (Utah) microbiology professor, will speak this morning in Laie about geneaological research he has conducted with DNA collected from BYU-Hawaii students and North Shore residents.

Woodward hopes to combine research with DNA analysis to help people track their family lineages. Researchers at BYU-Provo are currently building a geneaological and genetic data base.

Woodward’s lecture is at 10 a.m. in the Cannon Activities Center on the BYUH campus. It is free and open to the public.

Water main bids sought

The Board of Water Supply is seeking bids to lay about 400 feet of water mains along Kamiloiki Place, connecting it to the end of Miloiki Street in Hawaii Kai.

The work should begin in mid-April and take about four months to complete. The project costs about $150,000.

The contractor may be able to cut down on the time by doing directional drilling, rather than digging up trenches. The work is needed to upgrade the pipe from a 4-inch to a 6-inch main.

LEEWARD

Bicyclist hurt in hit-and-run

A 21-year-old bicyclist was critically injured yesterday in a hit-and-run collision in Ewa, police said.

The man was cycling toward Ewa Beach on the right shoulder lane of Fort Weaver Road about 12:45 a.m. when he was struck from behind by a van, police said.

The collision occurred near the intersection of Old Fort Weaver Road, less than a mile from the St. Francis Medical Center-West, police said.

Investigators are looking for a blue van possibly, similar to a Ford Aerostar. The van sustained front end damage, police said.

The cyclist was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center with lower body and major head injuries, police said.

They said speed and alcohol are being investigated as possible factors in the crash.

Pipe rupture closes school

A water main break on campus forced the closure of Waipahu High School yesterday, but the school is expected to be open today.

The Department of Education’s Leeward District Office told school officials at about 8 a.m. to cancel classes yesterday, said Warren Harada, the school’s business manager.

The water main ruptured in the main driveway near the administration office and affected the restrooms and cafeteria.

Officials closed the school for health reasons and repairs were expected to take up to one day, Harada said.

Cat burglar still at large

A nude cat burglar who broke into a Temple Valley home and stole money last week is still on the loose, police said.

Police said the burglary occurred last Thursday at about 3:45 a.m.

A woman told police she awoke and saw a naked man in her living room. Upon being discovered, the man fled through the back door.

The woman said the man entered the house by cutting the screen of a sliding door in the back of her home.

The woman also told police that $130 was missing from her foyer.

Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.
